Post-doc position available (start: March 1, 2019)

Computational modeling of EEG for consciousness studies

Context

The recruited Post-Doc fellow will join the European project “LUMINOUS” (FET-Open). The central topic of this project is the study, the measurement, and the alteration of consciousness through the exploitation of information theoretic principles. Supported by computational neuroscience models, the project aims at creating novel metrics of consciousness based on electroencephalography (EEG) and consciousness-probing technologies based on non-invasive electromagnetic brain stimulation (NIBS). Computational models are developed to provide mechanistic insights related to specific human studies in sleep, anesthesia, locked-in syndrome, disorders of consciousness.

Background. Work to be achieved

During the 2 first years of the project, we have developed a computational model of the human brain. Combining biophysical and neurophysiological aspects, this model can reproduce realistic EEG across several conscious states, through changing a limited number of parameters linked with thalamo-cortical and cortico-cortical connectivity. This model constitutes a solid starting point to a number of appealing extensions. Among the many perspectives, we have identified two important issues. The recruited Post-Doc fellow will actively contribute to both issues.

First, we aim to add NIBS effects in the model, which would allow us to explore how externally-applied perturbations may induce changes between states of consciousness (from sleep to awake, for instance). Second, in the context of anesthesia, the model could provide crucial insights about the time evolution of specific EEG metrics. Here, the envisioned extension will consist in representing the effects of anesthetic agents in the model and identify model parameters from actual EEG data.

Required scientific and technical skills

The candidate will perform her/his research work at LTSI at the University of Rennes, France. She/he will have skills in the field of electrical engineering, computer sciences or applied mathematics (nonlinear differential equations, dynamical models). An interest for neurosciences in general, and for the modeling of neural networks in particular, would be an additional advantage. Programming skills (C, Matlab) would also be an asset. In addition, as this project is part of the “Luminous” European Project (FET-Open), the candidate will have the unique opportunity to attend meetings with the other partners of the consortium (Spain, Germany, UK, Italy).
