Signal processing for motion capture data

The University of Montpellier (LIRMM Laboratory) is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher who will play a leading role in the development and implementation of solutions that will contribute to the achievement of the scientific and technical objectives of the MOVCAP project.

The goal of the MOVCAP project is to develop a technical solution for capturing the kinematics of human movement, while the human target is moving (for instance a subject performing outdoor sport). This will be achieved by combining a lightweight motion capture (mocap) device with a flying drone. Thanks to a visual servoing scheme, the drone will follow the human performing physical activity and the mocap system will be used to record the 3D positions of active markers placed on the participant.

 

The European Regional funded project –MOVCAP- involves four partners:

LIRMM Laboratory: processing of the motion capture data.
Gambi-M company: software development for the control of the drone.
LGI2P Laboratory IMT Mines Alès: visual tracking.
EuroMov Laboratory: data recording and validation.

The goal of the MOVCAP project is to develop a technical solution for capturing the kinematics of human movement, while the human target is moving (for instance a subject performing outdoor sport). This will be achieved by combining a lightweight motion capture (mocap) device with a flying drone. Thanks to a visual servoing scheme, the drone will follow the human performing physical activity and the mocap system will be used to record the 3D positions of active markers placed on the participant.
The raw captured trajectories of the human will then have to be processed in order to reconstruct his/her movements through several filtering and reconstruction techniques from signal processing. This offline processing will be the main challenge for the post-doc. The post-doctoral researcher will also collaborate with the Gambi-M company in order to code the motion commands of the drone and its control. This task will be conducted at the company site, through travel missions.
An experimental set-up for simulating the displacements of the drone and the acquisition of 3D data could be a good place to start in order to identify issues and propose solutions for the reconstruction of the trajectories, and to potentially classify them. The EuroMov laboratory, which is specialized in human movement science, will exploit the final results.

Desired experiences and qualification of the candidate:
The main required experience is in signal processing. Knowledge of techniques of reconstruction of trajectories from motion capture data (or similar technical problems) will be very useful. Knowledge of software control of drones is also a plus.

Applications should include a complete CV with a full list of publications, letter of intent, academic transcripts and degree certificates, as well as two academic references. The position will start in October or November 2019, for 27 months. The Gambi-M company envisions to extend its workforce and is likely to hire the candidate after the mission in order to achieve the industrial prototyping.
Net salary will be ranging from 2000 to 2300 euros, depending on the candidate experience.
