An international research competition focused on computer vision and object recognition technologies has been launched at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Bangalore, India. Initiator of the contest is EADS Innovation Works, the EADS Group’s corporate research and technology network, while Astrium, the European leader in space technology, and Parrot, an innovator in wireless devices, contribute as sponsors.

Graduate students from all over the world can participate.

Under the title “Find me if you can!” the competition addresses the re-identification of humans in images. Its main goal is to seek innovative and efficient algorithmic approaches to solve the following problem: “Given two pictures each showing a person, can you tell me whether it is the same person or not?” The teams can upload their own photo data and test their algorithms on this website: http://jointhespirit.eads.com. The fastest and most effective re-identification code will be awarded an exclusive trip to Kourou, French Guiana, on the occasion of an Ariane 5 launch.

“We encourage students to actively engage in the pioneering field of computerised object recognition,” said Yann Barbaux, Head of EADS Innovation Works, who kicked off the competition, while launching a new mathematics-chair at TIFR, supported by the EADS Corporate Foundation. “Instead of just being interested observers, they are offered the unique chance to leave their footprints within an industry-related scientific discourse, displaying various practical applications, such as the safeguarding of major sports events.”

Students may tackle the task on their own, or in teams of up to two persons. EADS Innovation Works opened the first phase of the competition on 1 March. It continues until 14 April 2013. Interim results will be published two weeks later, with the 20 progressing teams being awarded an AR.Drone 2.0 donated by Parrot. Finally, the second phase closes on 30 September 2013 at midnight GMT.

This contest is the third in a series of competitions under the “Join the Spirit” series dedicated to various scientific subjects relevant to EADS Innovation Works’ scope of research activity. Each competition is also announced via social media channels and on the EADS website: www.eads.com.

EADS Innovation Works is a global network of seven trans-national Technical Capability Centres that have the mission to identify new value-creating technologies and to develop technological skills and resources. The organisation also operates EADS’ corporate research and technology laboratories that promote the group’s technical innovation potential with a focus on sustainability.
