We cordially invite you to participate to The Joint ICA-ISPRS GeoVIS Workshop on “Rendering and Cognition with Images and Hybrid Visualizations”,organized at the ISPRS Geospatial Week 2015. The main organizer of the Geospatial Week 2015 is the French Mapping Agency (IGN France) and the event will take place in Montpellier, France, from September 28th to October 3rd, 2015 ( The GeoVIS workshop is driven by the members of ICA Commission on Cognitive Visualization and ISPRS Commission on Geovisualization and Virtual Reality. A joint effort by these two commissions brings together geovisualization experts to discuss cognitive as well as technical aspects of geovisualization design. A particular focus of the workshop is rendering and cognition with images and hybrid visualizations. The term hybrid here refers to multiple-linked views, raster/vector overlays, mixed realism displays as in virtual or augmented reality and similar. The program will feature oral presentations and a poster session.

Workshop Topics

With the ubiquity of high resolution sensors, today we face the challenges of dealing with a wide range of heterogeneous data types (e.g., images, 3D models, LIDAR points, raw data, etc.). This data- and information-rich era encourages visual analytics approaches and requires new ideas for visualization design. Currently we witness enthusiasm for images and multiple-linked views in which data can be “co-visualized” for a given purpose (which we call hybrid visualizations). However how effective and efficient images and hybrid visualizations are for decision-making processes is yet to be established. In this framework, we invite you to submit research papers related (but not limited) to the topics listed below:

  • hybrid visualizations of heterogeneous geographical data (imagery, LIDAR data, vector data, 3D models, etc.)
  • hybrid visualizations of user generated data, geovisualization Web 2.0
  • contribution of imagery to efficient visualizations
  • handling visual complexity of information-rich visualizations (e.g. imagery, photo-realistic representations)
  • imagery based decision making and related perceptual and cognitive mechanisms
  • image-based representations, mixed reality representations
  • uncertainty issues with heterogeneous geographical data
  • usability, use and user issues of hybrid visualizations
  • interaction and navigation through heterogeneous data and hybrid visualizations

Important Dates

  • 15th April 2015: Full paper & Abstract submission deadline
  • 1st June 2015: Notifications of acceptance
  • 15th June 2015: Early-bird registration deadline
  • 1st July 2015: Camera-ready paper due


Main Conference:

GeoVIS will be a one or two day event in the course of the ISPRS Geospatial Week, which will take place in La Grande Motte between September 28 and October 3, 2015.

Paper Submission

  • High-quality papers covering one or more of the conference topics should be submitted electronically using the conference tool on the conference web site.
  • Please, consider strictly the deadline for the submission of full papers, see Important Dates.
  • Two types of papers can be submitted:

o    Full papers of 6-8 pages in length. The accepted full papers will appear in a volume of the ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences.

o    Extended Abstracts should be at least 1 page in length, possibly with images, reporting a brief but complete summary of the (future) paper with latest results of ongoing researches, innovative applications, and case studies. The accepted full papers will appear in a volume of the ISPRS Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences.

  • All papers will be submitted to a double blind peer review process.
  • For notification of acceptance see Important Dates
  • At least one author has to be registered before the deadline of authors to warrant publication of the paper in the proceedings, see Important Dates
  • A limited number of best papers submitted to GeoVis will be selected and the authors will have the possibility to submit an extended version of their articles to the ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing
