Call for Papers Special Issue on “Remote Sensing of the World's Oceans”

To be published in IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing (JSTARS)

Since the launch of SEASAT in 1978, traditional remote sensing technologies based on the original four instruments (radiometer, altimeter, scatterometer, and SAR), have been greatly advanced in many oceanography research fields including ocean wind, current, colour, temperature, among others. In the past decade, researches using the newer remote sensing technologies, i.e., multispectral/hyperspectral optical sensing and multi-band/multi-frequency radar sensing, were carried out worldwide. In addition, there is an increased trend in the synergistic use of multiscale/multisensor remote sensing observations with models, data assimilation systems for ocean studies. This special issue aims at demonstrating the state-of-the-art in utilizing remote sensing data for ocean research.

We are inviting both theoretical, methodological and experimental papers. The topics of this special issue include (but are not limited to):

  • Remote sensing instrument calibration and validation
  • Ocean applications of synthetic aperture radar
  • Applications of hyperspectral instruments for oceanic research
  • Assimilation of remote sensing data into numerical models
  • Remote sensing studies of ocean geophysical parameters (e.g., sea surface temperature, salinity, and winds; ocean colour, sea level, waves, bathymetry, ...)
  • Monitoring and surveillance of the ocean (target and oil spill detection and tracking, fisheries, maritime traffic)
  • Novel applications of historical ocean remote sensing datasets
  • Submission deadline : December 1, 2015
  • Expected publication : October 2016
